Artist Statement

I listened to Fearless: The Undaunted Courage and Ultimate Sacrifice of Navy SEAL Team SIX Operator Adam Brown by author Eric Blehm for the first time in July of 2014. After that experience I felt strongly that I needed to pursue some way to serve our military through my art- specifically the Gold Star community. The following year I discovered, approached and was invited to join The American Fallen Soldiers Project with founding artist Phil Taylor, providing painted portraits of our fallen heroes to their Gold Star loved ones. Being a part of that effort, offering healing and support to those who must live their sacrifice, and representing untold millions of grateful Americans to those families, has been among the most meaningful experiences of my life.

Before joining AFSP and in addition to the personal growth initiated by the book, my inspiration from Fearless took the form of a vision to create a portrait of Adam, but I waited for God's leading and timing in regards to my developing skill level and an opportunity to share such a work with a broad audience- on a scale his story deserves.

My vision was to portray Adam on his personal mission of providing shoes for Afghan children. This gesture was one of many high points in the book for me and I believe beautifully expresses the heart and mind of this warrior (among the world’s best) engaged in the battle against good and evil, guided by his faith and love of God and freedom both in picking up his weapon and in handing out a pair of children’s shoes. While I know there is much debate and varying viewpoints about the role of our military, I personally see Adam’s actions as a perfect picture of an individual finding the challenging balance of heart and mind in the fight to defend and share freedom in all its forms, and feel it provides America with a vivid definition of love within this specific context.

It was a wonderful honor and privilege to commemorate Adam in the best way I know how, not just because of his heroism and the inspiration he has been to countless people, but also as an expression of gratitude for his sacrifice for my freedom and that of my family, and the way his story has impacted me personally.

It is my dream and prayer that these prints will find a home with people who draw inspiration from their display. I hope my historical art will provide cultivating opportunities for parents with their children, spark the imagination of what is possible in one's own life, and serve as a visual reminder of the best parts of who we are as Americans- and, more importantly, who we are when we live out all that our good God gave us life to become and do.
